SEL. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Workshop is designed to support educators, school leaders, and support staff in strengthening emotional intelligence, resilience, communication, and relationship-building skills. These sessions provide practical strategies to manage stress, build positive school culture, support student behavior, and foster personal well-being.

Workshops are interactive and include reflection, discussion, real-life scenarios, and actionable tools that participants can immediately apply in school and professional settings. Sessions are aligned with NYC DOE priorities for staff wellness, student support, and school climate.

Social Emotional Staff and Student Activities

1. The Backpack We Carry

Theme: Hidden emotional burdens educators and students carry

Focus:

  • stress awareness

  • compassion fatigue

  • trauma-informed thinking

  • empathy

Main Message: “Many people walk into schools carrying invisible weight.”

Hands-On Activity:

Participants place written burdens into a backpack:

  • pressure

  • family stress

  • burnout

  • student trauma

  • grief

  • expectations

Classroom Translation:

Students also carry invisible emotional burdens.

2. What’s In Your Cup?

Theme: Emotional overflow and self-awareness

Focus:

  • emotional regulation

  • triggers

  • emotional responses

  • wellness

Main Message: “Pressure reveals what is inside.”

Hands-On Activity:

Red cup reflection activity using sticky notes:

  • what drains me

  • what fills me

Classroom Translation: Student behaviors often reflect unmet emotional needs.

3. Crumpled Paper Hearts

Theme: The power of words

Focus:

  • emotional safety

  • educator language

  • student identity

  • communication

Main Message: “Words leave emotional imprints.”

Hands-On Activity: Participants crumple hearts during negative statements, then smooth them back out.

Classroom Translation:

Students remember how educators make them feel.

With over 35 years of experience in the New York City Department of Education; serving as a teacher, coordinator, assistant principal, principal, deputy superintendent, and educational consultant. Dr. Jackie Jones brings expertise that supports both individual growth and organizational transformation.
